Bishops and People: Looking for Local Religious Life in Late Antiquity

 The religiosity of late antique and early medieval communities in the Mediterranean world has been vigorously examined debated. This religious life called (among many other terms) ‘popular Christianity,’ ‘local ‘second church,’ ‘Religion zweiter Ordnung,’ ‘the third paganism.’ In my article, I analyse from viewpoint encounters—between ideals ecclesiastical elite people’s local cultic practices. These practices, embedded communities, varied by regions but we can see similarities interaction bishops with their population. will show how writers portrayed practices negative terms as another religion (‘paganism,’ ‘idolatry,’ ‘demonic/ diabolic practices’), divergent own (‘Christianity’), or even a distortion beyond ‘proper’ (‘magic’, ‘superstition’, ‘sacrilege’). analysis, discuss test various approaches that scholars have developed to understand tensions between people: David Frankfurter (local religion), Rubina Raja Jörg Rüpke lived Nicola Denzey Lewis (magic Lisa Kaaren Bailey (lay religion) Lucy Grig (popular culture).
